This is a claim I think belittles both the genuine sufferering many Chinese women were forced to undergo (by their mothers!), and the intelligence and freedom of choice (ie, not being forced) of women in general, even in their choices of footwear. So yes, it would not surprise me if she was a Birkenstock wearer!
